What is guidance in child development?

Guidance in child development can be defined as the positive involvement of a person using words and actions for a child’s skill development when mistakes happen.

For that, first of all, you have to consider the strengths, family cultures, temperaments, and skills of that child. Then you can choose the best strategy to support him in his development.

There you have to help the child to select positive choices by overcoming these mistakes. The guide has to create the best physical and social environment where they can develop themselves through learning.

So, what can be gained for the development of the child through guidance? Accordingly, the children learn to control their feelings and behaviors, which are known as self-regulation.

As children are the world’s future, it is essential to understand the way of functioning civilly in the modern complex society. Therefore, the guidance should help to develop all these skills of children.

Developing life skills

Five significant life skills have been recognized as democratic life skills. They are;

  • Becoming a valuable individual as a member of a group with acceptance.
  • Using non-hurting ways to express strong emotions.
  • Using creative and independent problem-solving methods cooperatively with others.
  • Accept the other’s unique human qualities.
  • Think ethically and intelligently.

The guide should focus on developing those life skills within children to behave well in society as respectable people.

Focus of positive guidance

And also, when supplementing the child with positive guidance for their development, the guide should focus on the following factors.

  • Planning purposive and funny experiences according to the differences of children and their backgrounds.
  • Provision of chances for the children to express themselves in a variety of ways.
  • Acknowledging, validating, and responding to the needs, concerns, and emotions of children.
  • The unique life experiences that influence the behaviors of children should be taken into consideration sensitively.
  • Arranging the environment for promoting the success of children.
  • Talking about challenging behaviors and emotions of children by using relationships and interactions of adults and peers.

By focusing on those things, the guide can successfully develop the skills of children.

Difference between guidance and discipline

When we consider guidance and discipline, it seems that both are similar in meanings. But they are two different terms. The significant difference between these two terms is that; the punishment does not involve guidance and, the rules and punishment involve discipline.

Guidance is provided as advice or as a precedent. It will help to clear problems or any difficulty. But disciplines train someone to obey and respect rules or specific codes of behavior and use punishments to rectify disobedience.

Likewise, guidance is helpful for children to improve the feeling of responsibility as well as control. And the discipline trains them to obey and respect various rules and codes of conduct.

Further, the guidance directs children towards learning, and the discipline leads children towards rules and conformity.

Guidance and discipline can be cited as two primary tools that modify a kid through social, emotional, and cognitive development

What can be gained through guidance and discipline?

Limits of safety

Guidance and discipline provide limits to help to manage the behaviors of children. Here, the parents can use a keen strategy for the establishment of house rules. Accordingly, they can give a chance for the kid to take part in creating house rules.

Then he will obey the rules as he is a part of the establishment of the rules. And it’s better to explain the consequences of breaking the rules of the house.

Bearing responsibilities

The sense of responsibility and the development of self-direction is a major impact of guidance and discipline on children. It can be conveyed in childhood itself by giving little tasks like rearranging toys after playing.

It will make your child feel that they are valuable children and the responsibilities are parts of life. Here, you can give your child to make choices that teach them to be independent, responsible, self-disciplined, and confident.

Building self-esteem through goals

Here, you have to pay more attention to provide a secure and safe environment at home to guide your children’s behaviors. And when they feel a sense of affection, they focus on achieving their goals freely.

Reasons children misbehave

When considering the misbehaviors of children, we can see that there are many reasons behind them.

  • Take the attention of others

Every child likes to have the attention of others. Their parent’s attention is very important to them. When parents are busy, children misbehave to take their attention. And, sometimes, they increase their misbehavior when parents pay attention to them.

Therefore, guidance and prevention are the most appropriate punishments for this type of child.

  • Copying the behaviors of parents

Children learn many things in childhood through what they see, hear and feel. So, when parents misbehave in front of children, the child also does the same.

Therefore, the best remedy to change this type of child is to change yourself and behave well in front of your children.

  • Test the parents

Some children misbehave to test the commitment of the parents to enforce rules. There they hope to test their parents and question the importance of their limits. They respect parents when they give fair and firm limits to them.

  • Asserting their independence and themselves

Sometimes children misbehave to express their growing independence and about themselves. There, the parents have to set up firm limits and admire the self-confidence of the children. And parents should reconsider the expectations of children when they resist the limits.

  • Minor attitude towards themselves

The minor attitude of children is also a reason for their misbehaviors. Accordingly, they think that; I am stupid, I am unpopular, my peers mistreat me, etc.

So, their lack of self-confidence leads them to misbehave. They want good guidance to value themselves.

Possible disciplinary techniques

You must help your children to behave as well-disciplined people in society as they grow. Here are some simple and practical techniques for you to make it easy.

  • Calm advice of parents

This is an effective technique that you can use. Show and teach children in the dearest way that misbehaviors lead to many problems. And at the same time show and tell them how good behaviors where you want to see them are appreciated in the society.

They also will happily listen when you pay your attention to them well, because all children like to have their parent’s attention.

Sometimes, children misbehave when they get bored and haven’t anything to do. So, give them some other tasks to fulfill like drawing, coloring, and keep the child active. It is the best way to convert his attention to something useful.

  • Set time limits to fulfill the tasks of children

You can teach your children disciplines like time management, punctuality even at 3 or 4 years old through simple techniques. Accordingly, set out a specific period for them when doing something.

As an example, ask your child to color a picture within half an hour. If he fulfills the task on time, you can prepare his favorite food for him and make him happy.

Logical consequences

Structured consequences that are followed by specific misbehaviors are logical. The child wants to see the way that the consequences and the behavior are directly related.

Fix-up

Here, there is a very simple lesson; if the children damage something, they have to help fix or clean it. If someone is distressed due to children, they have to help to relieve it.
