Is it hard to homeschool a kindergartener?

Kindergarteners being more active and mischievous doesn’t sound bad since that is their natural way of behavior. Most of the parents misunderstand the situation and jump to the conclusion that homeschooling is tough and strenuous work.

That is not the reality, and the process is much easier than we think. Below I have listed out basic facts that might help you to make your homeschooling attempt successful and easy.

Understanding

Kindergarteners are always interested in exploring new knowledge. They are not willing to sit beside a table and engage in learning.

They learn from their activities being experimental, and as a parent, you should find it quite normal and understand the kid’s mentality as well. If you understand this, homeschool will not work that hard for you.

Knowledge

Homeschooling becomes much easier with this knowledge. It is not advisable to get assistance from a person who has been doing homeschooling.

Just consult your state authorities and get to know about the requirements, such as specific study hours, and be equipped to fulfill those requirements.

Doing reading and math is quite important since they act as the foundation for all the other learning areas, and never hesitate to go along the process of teaching those subjects more interestingly.

If you have enough knowledge regarding all the requirements, then homeschooling won’t become a hard job for you.

Be Active

As we all know, kindergarteners are active and have lots of energy. Therefore, you need to be very active to have a successful homeschool. Gaining and maintaining your kid’s attention, teach and make the kid do activities correctly will need lots of energy.

It is very important to know this fact before you start homeschooling kindergarten, as otherwise, it will demotivate you when you get tired of your daily routine.

Be Patient

Never attempt to be over strict and show frustrated behaviors such as yelling and scolding in front of the child just to make sure the learning to go according to the plan. Make it more funny and exciting and let them grab those expectations themselves.

Therefore, always be patient and keep yourself calm down and handle the situations accordingly.

What does a kindergartener need to learn for homeschooling?

There are ample things for a kindergartener to learn for homeschooling. As I mentioned before, homeschooling can be interesting if we can trace what a kindergartener should learn from this.

Getting accustomed to a schedule

This is a wonderful approach for a child to work under a timetable or, in other words, under a planned routine. This works under three schedules, morning schedule, school schedule, and afternoon schedule.

A kindergartener should learn to work according to a planned set of activities if she or he is getting into homeschooling.

In the morning schedule, the child must learn the calendar, good habits, and important facts that can raise the kid’s general knowledge. You can spend more or less 30 minutes before breakfast for this morning’s scheduled time.

The schooling schedule is the time for educational activities such as letters, numbers, art, and craft. It is advisable to spend more or less 2 hours on this section. But to not forget to give a little break or free play times in between different activities.

Giving some free time or nap time after lunch, you can start the evening schedule. During this schedule, focus on play-based learning or project-based learning. You can easily let your kid play educational games.

This session should be ended within 1 hour, and then you can let your kid have family time or free play time with siblings.

Social skills

Although you are doing homeschooling, it is your responsibility to make your kid ready to enter into society. In that case, developing social skills is very important and needed.

Storytime and family time can use to teach social skills to your kids. You can use exciting ways like role play, storytelling sessions, and family get-togethers in this regard.

Further, to develop social skills, you can plan some events like play day with friends, celebrations, and costume parties. Do not forget to invite same-age kids to these events and let your kid socializing with them.

It won’t be a hard task to find some same age kids if you contact and invite to join the parent doing homeschooling for their kids.

Teach to be independent

Since you are homeschooling, you are always around your kid and, there is a high risk of your kid being obsessed with you. This is not good for childhood development, and it will be a huge barrier to improve the kid’s self-help skills

During homeschooling, teach the kid the importance of being independent and help the kid to be so. For instance, let the child eat along by sitting nicely at a table, encourage the kid to get dress, and get ready for the lessons by themselves.

Do I need a curriculum for kindergarten homeschool?

This is one of the popping-up questions for most parents. The direct answer to this is YES. You need a curriculum for kindergarten indeed.

To carry out homeschooling in a more methodological manner, you should always get adhere to a curriculum. I have stated the pros of having a curriculum for your reference.

Helps to get along with a firm set of subjects

In homeschooling, you may teach all the firm subjects to your kids. You can follow any curriculum according to your choice.  There are many ways you can buy a kindergarten curriculum online and offline. But it should include all the fine subjects such as

  • Phonics
  • Reading
  • Math
  • Writing
  • Social studies
  • Bible (religion)
  • Experiments
  • Art and crafts

According to your free will, you can add certain subjects to this list as well, which you think would give the child positive limelight. Together with the curriculum, you will find worksheets, instructions for the education activities, and the learning outcomes of the curriculum.

Do not forget to pay your attention carefully and read the entire document before you get started with homeschooling.

Helps to fulfill kindergarten learning objectives

Following a curriculum will allow you to fulfill all the learning objectives of nursery education. Such as understanding simple reading parts, counting (learn to start counting from any number rather than 1), distinguish upper case and lower case letters, etc.

By carrying out progress reviews that come with the curriculum would help you to measure the objectives.

Helps to stay on track

Following a curriculum would help you to stay on track and not to be disrupted. Since curriculum could help you to easily plan your school days or weeks, you will not get tired by having too much workload.

While the curriculum helps you to decide the lesson plans, you would fully focus on the teaching.

What is the best kindergarten homeschool curriculum?

Before getting into the subject, let me share a personal insight that I came across with one of my personal experiences. One of my friends used to homeschool her kid when she was around 3 years old.

My friend did not have any idea about the best sort of curriculum that she should follow in the process of homeschooling kindergarten. She used to teach her child from morning till the afternoon taking around five hours per day on every weekday by letting the child work only with the books.

She did not let her kid go out and do small experimental activities out of fear that the child may get injured being overprotective. During the first two hours, the child showed active participation.

After those two hours, the child showed less concentration towards learning things and complain about getting bored. At first, she got confused and worried at the same time, but after consulting an expert who has been engaging in homeschooling kindergarten for many years, she got to know about the best homeschool curriculum.

Let me share that piece of wisdom that she shared with me. Homeschooling should be focused on a maximum of two study hours per day, and working small proportions of each subject every day would give better results as well.

According to the requirements of the child and the levels of capabilities of the child, the best curriculum may differ.

Further, learning through mistakes and experiences that come across such expositions is quite precious. For example, let the child play with soil and mud. Get dirt and be creative. It will drive the child to be more creative.
